Cost guide
How much do ev chargers cost?
A 7kW home charger is £800 to £1,400 fitted including the unit. The grant takes £500 off for those eligible for it. A workplace installation is priced per socket and falls as the number of sockets rises.
Typical prices
Ranges, not quotes. A quote depends on your room.
| Work | Typical UK price |
|---|---|
| 7kW charger, short run, existing spare way | £800 to £1,000 |
| 7kW charger, run over 15 metres | £1,000 to £1,400 |
| Earth rod where the charger needs one | £120 to £250 |
| Load management device fitted | £150 to £350 |
| Garage consumer unit and submain | £400 to £900 |
| Workplace, four sockets with load balancing | £4,500 to £9,000 |
Charging on a cheap overnight tariff is where the saving actually is. A charger that talks to the tariff and a tariff that rewards it are worth more over a year than the difference between any two installation quotes on this page.
What moves the price
- Cable run from the consumer unit to the parking space, and whether it goes through a loft, under a floor or around an outside wall.
- Whether the drive has to be dug or a wall cored.
- Spare ways in the existing consumer unit, and whether a garage board or a separate enclosure is needed.
- Whether an earth rod is required, which depends on the charger and the supply.
- Load management hardware where the main fuse is small or the house is all electric.
- The charger itself. Tethered, untethered, and solar integration all change the unit price more than the labour.

Questions about ev chargers
How long is the cable run allowed to be?
There is no fixed limit, but voltage drop and cable cost both rise with distance. Runs beyond about 20 metres usually mean going up a cable size. Get the distance measured rather than estimated before the quote is accepted.
Tethered or untethered?
A tethered unit has the cable attached and is quicker to use daily. An untethered socket suits a shared driveway, a tidier wall, and a household that may change to a car with a different connector. Both cost about the same.
