Have one switch plate taken off before you buy anything. Ten minutes tells you whether there is a neutral there, and that answer decides the budget more than any product choice you are about to make.

What moves the price

  • Whether there is a neutral at the switch positions, which is the single biggest fork in the job.
  • Number of switch positions, and whether any are two way or intermediate.
  • Whether a hub is local or the system depends on a cloud service.
  • Heating controls and zone valves, which are a separate trade boundary.
  • Network coverage, and whether access points or cabling are needed to reach the far end of the house.
  • Making good where a neutral has to be run to a switch position.

Questions about smart home

What should I fit first?

Heating controls with zoning, then lighting in the two or three rooms used in the evening. Both get used every day. Blinds, locks and speakers are where enthusiasm usually outruns the household.

Can I keep my existing light fittings?

Normally yes, if the switch is doing the work rather than the bulb. Smart switches keep the fittings and the lamps you have and control the circuit, which is usually the tidier approach.
